About Milk Island

The coastal view from my home features a trio of islands: Salt Island, a gorgeous brush-covered landmass accessible from Good Harbor Beach twice a day via sandbar, Thacher Island, home of the famous lighthouse pair Twin Lights, and the distant strip of land called Milk Island. What old timers call a skerry, Milk Island is a rocky outcropping that can never be touched as part of its protection under Mass Audubon’s Important Bird Area. It sits at the horizon line, a distant feature of the landscape, and serves as an important high water mark when storms swell the seas high enough to cover it completely.
